Overview

Life Story

Van Dai was born in the spring of 1942, the eldest of five children. From an early age he was known for his quiet patience and a gift for making everyone around him feel heard.

He spent more than three decades as a schoolteacher, where generations of students came to know him simply as a steady, generous presence. He believed that the smallest kindness, repeated daily, was what built a good life.

Above all he loved his family. The garden he kept, the long Sunday meals, the bad jokes told at exactly the right moment — these are the things his children and grandchildren will carry forward.

Memories shared by family & friends

  • One more I wanted to add — the summer trip in 1988. I'll leave it here for the family to look over first.

  • Every summer a paper bag of tomatoes from his garden would turn up on our porch, never with a note. We only knew it was him because they were always the best on the street.

  • I taught in the classroom next to Van's for nearly twenty years. On my hardest days he'd appear at my door with two cups of tea and no agenda — just a few quiet minutes until the world felt manageable again.
